South America

South AmericaSouth America is the continent below North America and the two are connected by Central America, which, though similar in culture to South America, is actually part of North America. The continent is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean on all sides except a small area of the north, which is connected to Panama.

The continent of South America is well known for its natural beauty which is very diverse, as it stretches from the equator, where it is very hot, to Antartica, where it can get extremely cold. The Andes Mountain range, which is the longest in the world stretches from north to south of the continent on the western side.

Some of the world’s most spectacular sights are in South America, including the world’s largest waterfall, Angel Falls which is located in Venezuela. The iconic statue ‘Christ the Redeemer’ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is one of the most famous images of the continent.

Not only does the continent comprise of the mainland countries, which include Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Chile and Argentina, but also islands off of the coast, such as the Falkland Islands and the South Sandwich Islands, which are territories of the United Kingdom.

The rich culture of South America is a mixture of the Spanish settlers’ culture and the native people’s cultures. The Amazonian Rainforest is home to many ancient tribes which still live as their ancestors have lived for thousands of years. There are also native people living in the Andes Mountains, as well as living amongst those of Spanish descent in the cities and towns.
